KCF has built three phases of a home for orphaned and destitute children who had been living in the streets of Meru, a small town on the northeast side of Mt. Kenya. Fifty-two children are now in residence in the Home.
KCF is diligently developing micro-businesses which will bring money into the home for operating expenses. The zero-grazing project is one of the businesses. It is under the direction and supervision of the KCF Trust Committee.
Zero grazing allows cows to be raised for milk products using a limited amount of space. This form of animal husbandry has been used successfully in agriculture. KCF now has sixteen cows "in residence" at Meru Children's Home. Subsequent calves will be sold for profit. We are also in the process of developing a project by which the manure can be mixed with compost to produce briquettes to be burned instead of firewood. These can be sold to for both domestic and commercial use.
KCF has also installed two grain (posho) mills on the property. Local institutions and indivituals bring various grains to the mill for grinding. While this is not a huge money-maker, it does realize a steady small income.
As mentioned in KCF's Philosophy Statement, we are working toward finding opportunities for this Home that will one day allow it to be completely self-sustaining and independent. That is our goal and we will work hard to achieve it.
